Staff from Portsmouth City School District enjoyed Portsmouth Winterfest with their families during a private skating event on the ice rink Sunday evening. The day began with a group from Portsmouth School District’s Orange Frog team volunteering at Winterfest to help visitors with their skates and onto the ice.
“It was really fun, and it went by so fast,” said Portsmouth High School Art Teacher April Deacon. “We need more opportunities like this to get together outside of work and get to know each other on a more personal level.”
After the work was done, the ice rink was reserved by the district for a private evening with its staff and their families. Staff members brought their families to enjoy the ice while listening to Christmas music and enjoying the twinkling lights of Winterfest. Some were skating like real pros, and others were still just learning. But everyone was smiling and having a great time together.
Leslie Wagner, a first-grade teacher at Portsmouth Elementary School, brought her family to the skating rink. She enjoyed having the space where her children could learn how to skate.
“We’ve tried skating a couple of times but it’s usually too crowded. They’re getting around better tonight since it’s less crowded,” she said. “We’re happy that the weather is nice. It’s a good night to be here.”
